ABOUT THE BOOK
In 1943, at the age of 18, Ebba Mikkelsen started serving as a
nurse for the German Red Cross. She stayed at camp hospitals both
in Poland and what is now the Czech Republic, and finally in
Berlin, where she stayed during the last days of the War. In the
end, she found herself, still just an inexperienced adolescent,
standing in the middle of an unbelievable mayhem. She had grown
into a young woman marked by the horrors of the War.
Horrifying scenes take place at the emergency camp in Speer's
infamous air-raid shelter, and historic events - like the death of
Goebbels, Adolf Hitler's propaganda minister, the Russian defeat of
Berlin and the consequent month's stay as a prisoner of war in
Moscow - are described at first hand.
At the return to Denmark after the War, Ebba faced charges at
the Danish High Court. The charges were finally dropped - but with
this book Ebba sets out, during a trip through present-day Berlin
together with author Mr. Tudvad, to account for the events and
experiences that drove her into the arms of one of the most
felonious regimes in history.
