ABOUT THE BOOK
Most adults stubbornly deny being
superstitious, but nonetheless they secretly touch wood, cross
their fingers or throw salt over their shoulder - only to be on the
safe side, of course.
All these rituals are inherited through
generations, but who really knows about their origin and meaning?
In Touch Wood the author, Hélène Wagn has chosen
a selection of the funniest and most common rituals and omens. In
an entertaining way, she explains how superstitions arise, and what
one is to do in order to ward off misfortune - or get lucky.
The book is divided into seven parts on
e.g. 'Everyday superstition' about ladders, horseshoes, moonlight
and shattered mirrors. Wagn also writes about 'The magic numbers',
'Wacky traditions all the year round' as well as 'Rules and rituals
from cradle to grave' about prams, birthday cake candles and
something white, blue, borrowed and old.
